Why Are You Always Online? (Not all content has to be entertaining)

Why are you always online? Come on it's not all epic fail and cat videos people. The internet is useful, and a great way to start to develop an online presence is to be useful. You don't always have to be entertaining.

You know who knows that? Loews. Loews has a great YouTube channel of DIY (Do It Yourself) videos that generate high numbers of traffic for them. And that's because when you don't know how to fix your sink, and don't want to pay a plumber, you go to YouTube University. Who better to learn how to install the sink from, then the the people who sold it to you. It makes sense. What wouldn't make sense, is an animated video series about kitchen appliances. (Although with the right premise, and cast of voice actors I would watch that...we're revisit this). And the video numbers keep climbing because everyday some new Larry, Curly, or Moe is buying a sink and not trying to pay a plumber.

Some of the biggest internet stars are over glorified teachers. My sister once showed me a video of a young asian woman who used make up to transform herself into Taylor Swift. She looked more like Taylor Swift Taylor Swift. Honestly, it was horrifying. Nevertheless it proved a solid point. That woman is good with makeup. Again, capturing a digital audience is not all about big numbers. Business gurus say all the time that 80 percent of your business comes from 20 percent of your clients. You don't always need to get a big audience, but you will always need the right audience.

Explainer videos are incredibly popular. I call it the trivia effect. Why do people love knowing obscure facts I'll never know. My mom binge watches the show How Things Are Made. She has never once stepped in a factory, or used that information to make something herself. That doesn't stop her from texting me weird "did you knows" during my lunch break. No mom, I had no idea that much thought went into the production of window blinds. Still, there is a market for this style.

One reason why your digital content hasn't taken off yet, is that you're not using the proper format. If you are in an industry that has a wealth of educational facets, it may benefit you to take the approach of being useful over being entertaining.
